The summer of 2008 saw me glued to the
television watching the Beijing Olympics. Oddly enough (or, being an
artist, maybe not) I was far more interested in the graphics than in
the games themselves...! The sideline banners had vibrant blends with
transparent patterns on them. The team jackets had patterns printed on
the bodies of the garments that continued over the seams onto the
sleeves. Even the gymnastic and swimsuits were graphic wonders. Having
worked in the garment industry for years, I knew some of the challenges
of blending colors and matching designs and hue across seams. Some of
the patterns were the single colors laid over color transitions which
made them appear to be blended even though they weren't. It was
absolutely fascinating ...and challenging! I had to try these
techniques myself!
The
result is the Beijing Suite .
My second round of acrylic prints reflects the concern for the
environment, not
only in the use of water based inks but also the graphic depiction of
the four
elements: Beijing I – Air,
Beijing II – Fire,
Beijing III – Earth,
Beijing IV – Water.
I've used
all the techniques listed above: multiple blends, transparent overlays,
and
single colors over transitions.
The chop mark is my name in Chinese. I had it made in
Taipei during my trip to Southeast Asia. Roll over the images above
with your mouse to see the chop stamped onto each print. Getting that
to be in the same place on each print was a process all by itself! I
taped the chop to the outside of a screen frame, registered the prints,
and began stamping. Between each stamp, I placed a small ink pad under
the chop, reinked the chop, registered the next print, and stamped. My
cousins were in the shop that day and were really impressed. To tell
the truth, I was too!!! |
